How to teach your child to read – Part 2

To prepare your child for the correct perception of the text, start with action in motion!

In reading is very important to develop a sense of rhythm. In this matter, the invaluable help provide games with a simple children’s musical instruments (drums, tambourines, marokasy, spoons). Chant melodies, rhythmic quatrains. Pay attention to your baby quiet sounds (for example on the nature of the singing of birds and cicadas). The five years of phonemic hearing child should be developed at the right level, it should easily hear and reproduce sounds in different parts of speech.

How to choose the right method of learning to read?

To simplify your choice, can be divided into the existing methods into several groups.

- Global reading – from infancy to toddler show whole words with pictures and associate them with the values (such as “dog” – picture a dog). This technique patented Glenn Doman.

- Read the syllables – the kid learns syllables, and it then reads the words. Author technique – Nikolai Zaitsev.

- In a literal reading – child learns letters, then learns to put the letters in syllables and syllables in words.

- The sound-letter technique – the kid hears, then sees them as part of a word, and then learns to hear them and to link with the letters.

In my opinion, sound-letter methods most versatile.

Here are a few reasons why I think so.

In children, the baby in the first place perceives sounds. So it’s hard to explain that there are sound “b” and have an “blah.” Logical that he began to teach sounds. But the lack of syllabic and global reading that the child learn by heart the words or syllables, with an analysis and parsing.

When syllabic and global reading there still difficulties in understanding and perception of the text, and it has a big effect on literacy. In syllabic reading difficulties appear with complicated words, children get used to the simple open syllables (“ma”, “pa”, “ka”)

Also in these methods of teaching reading is clearly violated major teaching principle “from simple to complex,” the child immediately dipped into a complex and intricate system of letters and combinations of words.

Let’s start the learning process.

The most important and central to the beginning of the training is the interest kid. Briefly (!) Tell why people invented writing, show the letters and characters. Encourage your child to read aloud (eg bedtime).

In the form of a game starts to get used to the sounds. Ask him to reproduce the sound he hears when flying flies in rustle of leaves, the buzzing of bees. Teach him to distinguish between vowels and consonants (not by the color of the alphabet and their pronunciation). Sing the vowels, and then ask them to sing what he heard. Then you say different words, and ask them to determine what is the first letter of the word (by ear, without images).

If all the above procedures you have done, and the baby is easy to distinguish sounds to the ear – only then you can begin to spell.

From early childhood we hang posters with the alphabet in pictures. But teaching baby letters only on these posters would be a mistake – he could associate the letters with a particular word, “a” – the shark. And when asked, what is the first letter of the word watermelon – he will not answer. You should initially extend associative array, and for this we must first master the sounds, then associate them with letters. After all, the letter – an expression of what we hear in characters.
